How to Cancel Car Registration in Victoria (and Claim Your Refund)

You can cancel rego VIC online in a few minutes with a myVicRoads account. If you want a refund, you also need one proof document.

This guide covers the steps, the refund, and the number plates. It also explains when to cancel if you’re about to scrap or sell the car.

How to Cancel Car Registration in Victoria

To cancel car registration, start with gathering your proof if you want a refund. VicRoads asks for an insurance report or wrecker’s receipt if the car was written off. For an interstate move, it wants a receipt showing the other state collected your plates. For any other reason, you can send a photo of your plate cut in half, or a statutory declaration.

Then follow these steps:

  • Log in to myVicRoads on the website or the app.
  • Open the Vehicles and Registration page and find the car.
  • Fill in the Cancel registration form.
  • Attach your document and request the refund in the same form.

The cancellation can take a few days to start. If the car was written off, it starts the day after the accident. Don’t drive the car on the road once it’s cancelled.

You can see the full steps on the VicRoads canhcel registration page.

Can You Cancel Your Rego Online With VicRoads?

In most cases, yes you can cancel it. Business vehicles work the same way, but you need a myVicRoads Business account.

Another thing to remember that if you want to keep custom plates, you can’t cancel online. You’ll need to call VicRoads or visit a Customer Service Centre. Bring ID, and a refund form if you want your money back.

The same goes for someone else’s car. You need the owner’s permission, a signed form, and a visit to a service centre.

Getting a Rego Refund When You Cancel

The refund covers the time left on your registration. VicRoads takes out a few fees first.

At the time of writing, it deducts a $22.10 processing fee and 10% of the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) fee. If your refund is smaller than those fees, you won’t get anything. Fees change, so check the VicRoads page before you apply.

Online refunds should land in your bank account within 10 business days. If that fails, VicRoads sends a cheque. In person or phone requests pay by cheque and can take up to four weeks.

What to Do With Your Number Plates

You don’t need to return your plates when you cancel online. Still, don’t leave them on a car you’ve stopped using. Take them off and store them safely, or destroy them if you used the photo option.

Custom plates are different. You can transfer them to another car or keep them. Tell VicRoads which you prefer before you cancel.

Selling to a buyer in another state? VicRoads says cancelling your rego and removing the plates means you won’t be responsible for fines linked to the car after the sale. Take the plates off before handover, and keep a signed receipt.

Do You Need to Cancel Rego Before a Car Is Scrapped?

Yes, VicRoads says to remove the plates and cancel the registration before you dispose of a car that no longer works or isn’t safe. It lists selling to a local wrecker or using a vehicle disposal company as the options.

Timing matters if you want a refund. A wrecker’s receipt counts as proof. So you can cancel after the car is collected and attach that receipt. Most people find this easier than hunting for a plate photo.

You can search our sell scrap car service handles pickup and pays cash. Before you book, check what documents you need to sell your car. Having them ready speeds up the pickup.
